How do I know if my infant needs chiropractic care?
Well, the short response is only a chiropractor would be able to answer that. I personally believe that every baby should be checked for subluxation by a pediatric chiropractor. They’re the only ones that can tell you for sure if your baby needs an adjustment.
As a parent, there are some common signs of nervous system interference that you can look for at home. These seemingly “small things” can turn into “bigger things” if not corrected.
Have you found yourself noticing your baby….
only turns their head to the right?
prefers feeding from the left breast?
excessively spits up throughout the day?
is struggling to stay asleep?
These are some indicators of atlas misalignment! The atlas is the top vertebrae of the spine. It controls the rotation of the head. Sometimes, due to fetal position or the birth process, the atlas position has shifted (80% of the time, in fact, according to a study done by Dr. Guttman!). If this is the case, their “center” is shifted- if they’re spending all of their time looking to the right, they don’t even know there’s a whole world on their left!!
The nervous system develops the most within the first 2 years of life. If their “center” is shifted, their neurology develops around that. It could lead to further problems down the road like:
difficulty latching
colic
ear infections
plagiocephaly (flat head spots)
Most people have visions of cracking backs when you say “chiropractor” but we are so much more than poppin bones! It’s a tough journey from the uterus to the outside world. When we assess these newbies we are gently looking for subluxations that may affect how that babe adjusts to the world. (No back cracking involved!)
Even if your baby doesn’t have any of those concerns it’s still a great idea to see us! Our goal is to keep those little nervous systems in tip top shape in order to deal with all of the new stimuli and environments they are encountering! And ultimately- hit those milestones.
That’s why I created my new course, Baby Bumps in the Road: Chiropractic Infant Support with At-Home Instruction. The inspiration for this self-paced course came from the most common infant ailments that I see in my pediatric practice and the panic that it causes most parents. Baby Bumps in the Road will cover things to look for that may be correlated to a need for chiropractic care including physical indicators, neurological explanations and associated anatomy. You’ll have access to exercises, additional resources, supplement recommendations and more to help your growing baby.
